If you’ve ever held an Xbox controller in your hands, you’ve felt part of gaming history. Since the launch of the original Xbox in 2001, Microsoft has continually refined and reimagined the controller design—transforming it from a bulky beast into one of the most beloved gaming peripherals ever made. At Save and Reload Games, we love looking back at gaming milestones, and the Xbox controller’s journey is definitely one worth revisiting.

The Duke (2001)
Let’s start with a legend. The original Xbox controller—affectionately (and sometimes mockingly) known as The Duke—was massive. It had a bold design, with an awkward button layout, two chunky analog sticks, and a lot of plastic. But it also introduced the now-standard offset stick layout and trigger buttons that gave it a unique edge. While not the most ergonomic, it left a lasting impression.
Fun fact: In 2018, a modern version of The Duke was re-released for nostalgic fans and collectors. We’ve seen a few come through trade-ins!

Controller S (2002)
After feedback (and some backlash), Microsoft released the Controller S. Smaller, lighter, and more comfortable, it became the standard for the rest of the Xbox’s lifespan and influenced future designs. If you had an original Xbox, chances are you either begged your parents for this upgrade or made it your Player 1 controller.

Xbox 360 Controller (2005)
Now we’re talking legendary status. The Xbox 360 controller is often considered one of the greatest controllers ever made. It improved ergonomics, had a responsive D-pad (well, kind of), and introduced wireless play as the norm. It set the tone for how modern controllers should feel—and it’s still loved by PC gamers to this day.
We get trade-ins for these all the time—wireless and wired—and they usually go quick.

Xbox One Controller (2013)
Refined, sleek, and solid. The Xbox One controller built on the 360’s strengths, added textured grips, improved triggers with haptic feedback, and featured a better D-pad. It also got tons of color variants and special editions—some of which are collector’s items today. If you’ve got a rare one, we’d love to see it!

Xbox Series X|S Controller (2020)
Today’s Xbox controller is a subtle but meaningful evolution. It’s slightly smaller, has a hybrid D-pad, textured triggers, USB-C charging, and a dedicated share button. It plays nice with PC, Xbox One, and Series consoles—and even mobile devices. It’s the culmination of two decades of thoughtful design tweaks.
Specialized Xbox Controllers: From Collectibles to Custom Creations
Over the years, Microsoft has gone far beyond the standard black controller—introducing a wide variety of specialized Xbox controllers that range from collectible limited editions to fully personalized designs.
First, let’s talk special editions. These controllers often launch alongside major game releases or milestones and feature bold, one-of-a-kind designs. From the rugged Gears of War editions to the sleek 20th Anniversary transparent black controller, each tells its own story. Some favorites among collectors include:
Halo Infinite Limited Edition
Forza Horizon 5 Vivid Shockwave
Cyberpunk 2077 Edition

We occasionally get these rare controllers in trade-ins at Save and Reload Games, and they tend to go fast. If you’re a collector or just want something that stands out, these editions are worth tracking down.
In addition to limited-run designs, Microsoft introduced the Xbox Design Lab in 2016—giving players full control over how their controller looks and feels. You can build your own from scratch: select your favorite colors, tweak individual parts like buttons and sticks, add metallic finishes, rubberized grips, and even engrave your name or gamertag.
It’s an awesome way to create something truly personal—whether you’re upgrading your gear or building a custom gift.

So… Which One Was the Best?
While it’s easy to crown the 360 controller as the fan favorite, each version has its own place in history. Whether you’re a retro collector or a next-gen gamer, the Xbox controller has always delivered a solid, accessible, and familiar experience.
At Save and Reload Games, we buy, sell, and trade Xbox consoles and controllers—whether you’ve got a 360 you haven’t touched in years or you’re looking for a unique Series X variant. If you’re holding onto one of these iconic controllers, bring it in. We might just help it find a new player to make memories with.
