Faxanadu

Faxanadu on the NES is a unique action role-playing platformer set in a world connected by the World Tree. Players control a nameless adventurer who returns to his ravaged hometown of Eolis to find it cursed and its inhabitants turned to stone. His quest to break the curse involves exploring interconnected towns, forests, and dungeons, battling mythical creatures with swords, axes, and magic spells, and collecting gold and items to upgrade his equipment. Unlike many platformers of its time, Faxanadu features a more deliberate pace, an emphasis on exploration and item management, and a distinct atmosphere with its detailed sprites and melancholic soundtrack, creating a memorable blend of action and RPG elements.
