Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat on the SNES is a home console port of the groundbreaking arcade fighting game, known for its digitized graphics and violent “Fatality” finishing moves. However, due to Nintendo’s strict content policies at the time, the SNES version underwent significant censorship. The blood from attacks was replaced with grey “sweat,” and the graphic Fatalities were altered or removed entirely, often replaced with less violent “Finishing Moves.” Despite these changes, the SNES version retained the core fighting mechanics and the iconic roster of characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Sonya Blade as they participate in a martial arts tournament to save Earthrealm from the evil Shang Tsung. While visually different and less gory than its arcade and Sega Genesis counterparts (which allowed for uncensored gameplay via a code), the SNES version still offered a unique and popular way to experience Mortal Kombat at home.
